Gels

Energy gels are concentrated sources of carbohydrates designed to provide quick and easily digestible energy during endurance activities like running, cycling, or triathlons. They help replenish the body's glycogen stores, which are the primary fuel source for muscles during exercise.

How energy gels work
  • Rapid Energy Supply: Most energy gels contain rapidly absorbed sugars like maltodextrin, fructose, or glucose, which quickly enter the bloodstream to fuel muscles and organs.
  • Electrolyte Balance: Many gels also contain electrolytes like sodium and potassium to help replace those lost through sweat and maintain proper electrolyte balance, which is crucial for preventing muscle cramps and ensuring hydration.
  • Avoiding the Bonk: During prolonged exercise, the body's glycogen stores can become depleted, leading to a sudden drop in energy levels, often referred to as "hitting the wall" or "bonking". Energy gels help delay or prevent this by providing carbohydrates, sustaining energy and delaying fatigue.
